Firefox 3 and the Scuttle Add-on

It seems, that the developer Marcus Campbell (Scuttle) doesn’t have time at the moment to take care about his Firefox Add-on Scuttle.
Therefore I publish here a short instruction how to modify the Add-on to work with Firefox 3.
- Download the Add-on here
- Rename the file scuttle-0.3.1-firefox+fl.xpi to scuttle-0.3.1-firefox+fl.zip
- Extract the zip-file
- Open the file install.rdf in an editor and search
<em:maxVersion>2.0.0.*</em:maxVersion>
- Change the version-number, e.g.:
<em:maxVersion>3.0.2.*</em:maxVersion>
- Generate a new Zip-file of the project with the modified file and change extension to .xpi
- Open the Firefox 3 add-on window and drag and drop this new file
Now you can use this Add-on also in Firefox 3. The Add-on is not very complex, I guess it will do also with further versions of Firefox.
For all, who don’t want to do this modification them self, you can download my modified version: scuttle-0.3.2-firefox+fl.xpi.
Changes against original:
- Version changed to 0.3.2 for better differentiation
- Version will run with Firefox Version: 1.0 – 3.0.*
- I added also a German translation, but there is still also English included

Since FF 3.5 my modified Version (V 0.3.2) is not working any longer. Therefore you can download the next Version 0.3.3 here, this will work with FF less than version 4.0

Hi! Ich habe auch Scuttle installiert, aber ich frage mich gerade, was das Plugin für Firefox wohl macht. Kannst du vielleicht eine kurze Beschreibung geben, was man damit anfangen kann?

Hallo Jens, das Plugin gibt dir die Möglichkeit zwei Buttons in der Navigationsleiste anzuzeigen.
und drücke “Scuttle this Page..” (Stern mit Pluszeichen), jetzt öffnet sich ein Popup, ggf. mußt du dich bei deiner Installation noch anmelden, dann wie üblich die Angaben zur Seite machen und “Favorit hinzufügen” klicken, schon ist “akeller’s world” bei dir gespeichert … 
(oder auch jede andere Seite die du speichern möchtest)
- Mein Scuttle
- Scuttle this Page (Bookmark hinzufügen)
Gehe zum Menü [Ansicht]-[Symbolleiste]-[Anpassen].
Jetzt hast du ein Fenster mit zusätzlichen Buttons, ziehe die beiden Scuttle-Button auf die Navigationsleiste und schließe das Fenster.
Unter [Extras]-[Add-Ons] wähle Scuttle und [Einstellungen]. Gib den Link zu deiner Seite ein und passe ggf. die Größe des Popup-Fensters an.

This add-on provides two buttons for your navigation-toolbar of firefox:
- My Scuttle
- Scuttle this Page (add Bookmark to Scuttle).
For installation, open the menu: [View]-[Toolbars]-[Customize] a window with additional buttons will open. Drag and drop the two Scuttle-buttons to your navigation-toolbar.
Open [Tools]-[Add-Ons], choose the Scuttle-Add-on and [Options] add the address of your Scuttle-installation and if necessary adjust the height and width of the pop-up.
Go to http://akeller.eu/en und push the button “Scuttle this page” (Star with plus), the pop-up will open, maybe you have to log in your account. Put in the form the needed information and bookmark my page

es richtig verstehe, ist es nur für eine Scuttle-Seite gedacht und
kein Tool, um einen Bookmark mit einem Schlag in mehreren
Scuttle-Clones einzutragen, richtig?

Ja Jens, funktioniert nur mit einer Scuttle-Installation, die man in den Einstellungen angibt. Über Lösungen, die automatisch bei einer Vielzahl von Systemen einträgt kann man geteilter Meinung sein.
Right, this Add-on is only for one Scuttle-System, the one you set in die Option. This is not a tool for automatically adding sites to a lot of social bookmark systems.

Hi Andreas! Ich habe Dein Add-on installiert und es erscheint auch
in der Liste der installierten Add-ons von Firefox (v3.0.1). Leider
passiert nichts, wenn ich auf die Buttons klicke (Scuttle-Home /
Scuttle this page) bzw. wenn ich im Kontextmenü den entsprechenden
Eintrag auswähle. Hast Du evtl. noch eine Idee, woran das liegen
könnte? Vielen Dank im Voraus, Jan

Hallo Jan,
das ist wirklich komisch. Könnte vielleicht ein anderes Add-on mit dem Scuttle-Add-on kollidieren? Versuche doch mal “einen frischen Firefox”, am einfachsten geht das mit dem Portablen Firefox (ohne Installation, einfach entpacken). Ansonsten die anderen Add-Ons eins nach dem anderen deaktivieren. Etwas anderes fällt mir im Moment leider auch nicht ein

Moin! Du hast recht gehabt. Nach diversen Restarts habe ich den
“Übeltäter” identifizieren können. Es war das Weave-Plugin von
Mozilla Labs
(https://wiki.mozilla.org/Labs/Weave/0.2/Release_Notes). Jetz, wo
ich es deaktiviert habe, funktionieren auch die Scuttle-Buttons.

Ich habe das plugin installiert aber wenn ich draufklicke, dann
passiert leider nichts. Schon einmal von dem Problem gehört? Gibt
es ein Log wo ich evtl. mehr herausfinden könnte ob es ein Konflikt
gibt?

Thanks for this great addon. I use Semanticscuttle 0.9.5.1 and FF
3.5.6 I’ve download the FF 3.5 addon but it’s still does’nt works.
Any idea? Thanks
